Montgomery HHS Opens Swine Flu Public Information Line

Residents with questions and concerns about the swine flu can call a new public information line at 240-777-4200, staffed by the County’s Department of Health and Human Services. Health workers will answer calls from 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. each weekday until it is no longer needed.

County Health and Safety Officials Provide Safety Tips to Avoid Window Falls

The summer season is here and County health and safety officials remind parents and those caring for children to take steps to prevent falls from windows. In 2007, one Montgomery County child died and three others were seriously injured after falling from open windows. Nationally, more than 4,000 children fall out of windows annually, with more than twenty-five percent requiring a hospital stay. Each year, more than a dozen children ages 10 and under die from window fall-related injuries. Read More

County Executive Isiah Leggett Names Interim Chief Bowers To Fire Chief Role

County Executive Isiah Leggett today concluded a nationwide search for a new fire chief by naming Acting Chief Richard R. Bowers, Jr. as Chief of the Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service (MCFRS). Bowers is a 32-year veteran of the department, and he has filled every rank and leadership role in MCFRS, including the role of Acting Chief since October 31, 2008, when the County’s first and only Fire Chief Thomas W. Carr, Jr. retired.

“Although we conducted an extensive nationwide search for fire chief, it is gratifying to know that our own interim chief beat all other competitors for the job,” said Leggett. “Our residents should take comfort in knowing that Montgomery County’s first class Fire and Rescue Service can only get better under the tutelage of such an experienced and highly-regarded leader in the fire and rescue field.” READ MORE

Maytag Recalls Refrigerators Due to Fire Hazard

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, in cooperation with the firm named below, today announced a voluntary recall of the following consumer product.

Name of product: Maytag®, Jenn-Air®, Amana®, Admiral®, Magic Chef®, Performa by Maytag® and Crosley® brand refrigerators
Units: About 1.6 million
Manufacturer: Maytag Corp., of Newton, Iowa

Hazard: An electrical failure in the relay, the component that turns on the refrigerator’s compressor, can cause overheating and pose a serious fire hazard.

Incidents/Injuries: Maytag has received 41 reports of refrigerator relay ignition, including 16 reports of property damage ranging from smoke damage to extensive kitchen damage.

Description: The recall includes certain Maytag®, Jenn-Air®, Amana®, Admiral®, Magic Chef®, Performa by Maytag® and Crosley® brand side by side and top freezer refrigerators. The affected refrigerators were manufactured in black, bisque, white and stainless steel. They have model and serial numbers printed on a label located on the top middle or left upper side of the refrigerator liner and have the following model and serial number combinations:

Montgomery County (MD) CERT Inauguration Response

Montgomery County activated their CERT volunteers on January 20th as part of the National Capital Region 2009 Inauguration Response. The CERTs were activated by Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service to support emergency services and provide customer assistance at Metro rail transit stations in anticipation of over three million visitors attending the Inauguration in frigid cold temperatures. At a special ceremony on February 12th,Montgomery County Executive Isiah Leggett honors CERT members activated for the Presidential Inauguration.

Montgomery County High School Fire Science Program

The Montgomery County, Maryland High School Fire Science program is a national award winning one or two year program for high school juniors and seniors to educate and train students to become firefighters and/or emergency medical service (EMS) providers in Montgomery County.


We are now accepting applications for the 2009-2010 school year. If any one has a son/daughter that is a junior or a senior in Montgomery County who would be interested in the fire service to go to www.mcfrs.org/psta/fire-science .

Units: About 500,000
Distributor: Atico International USA Inc., of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.
Hazard: These coffeemakers can ignite due to an electrical failure, posing a fire hazard.
Incidents/Injuries: Atico International USA, Inc. has received 23 reports of coffeemakers igniting, resulting in property damage. No injuries have been reported.
