Cabin John Park Volunteer Fire Department Bolsters Fire Prevention Efforts with FM Global Grant

BETHESDA, MD - The Cabin John Park Volunteer Fire Department was awarded a prestigious Fire Prevention Grant from FM Global, one of the world’s largest commercial property insurers.

FM Global representatives presented the award to Deputy Chief Corinne Piccardi at the Cabin John Park Volunteer Fire Department located at 8001 River Road in Bethesda. The award will be used to assist with fire prevention activities in the community to help educate the community and reduce the number of preventable fires. Fire continues to be the leading cause of property damage worldwide. For more than 40 years, FM Global has contributed millions of dollars in fire prevention grants to fire service organizations around the globe to educate and raise awareness about fire safety. Locally, the company has awarded grants to a number of Maryland-based organizations.

“At FM Global, we strongly believe the majority of property damage is preventable, not inevitable,” said Michael Spaziani, Manager of the Fire Prevention Grant Program. “Far too often, inadequate budgets prevent organizations working to prevent fires from being as proactive as they would like to be. With additional financial support, grant recipients are actively helping to improve property risk in the communities they serve.”

Through its Fire Prevention Grant Program, FM Global awards grants to fire departments - as well as national, state, regional, local and community organizations worldwide - that best demonstrate a need for funding where dollars can have the most demonstrable impact on preventing fire, or mitigating the damage it can quickly cause.

Loss of a Champion

It is with heartfelt sadness that Fire Chief Scott Goldstein announces the sudden passing of Emilie Crown on Monday, February 6, 2017.  For over 36 years Emilie has been a tireless advocate and champion for children’s safety, the architect of Montgomery County’s nationally acclaimed car seat program, instrumental at the legislative level to pass Maryland's Booster Seat Law and was considered one of the leading and foremost authorities on Child Passenger Safety across the Country.

Smart Trends: Initiative Aims at Reducing Non-Emergency 911 Calls

Collaborative Approach is Changing the Future Landscape of Emergency Care - One Call at a Time 

There has been a growing focus on reducing the number of frequent users of the 911 Emergency System as a means of decreasing healthcare costs and reducing the strain on EMS resources. Frequent, repeat use EMS users are a diverse group of individuals with a wide range of medical, behavioral and social challenges and account for a disproportionate number of non-urgent EMS calls and transports.

The Montgomery County Fire & Rescue Service (MCFRS) was invited to the National Academy of EMS Physicians Annual Conference to present a research abstract discussing the impacts of its collaborative partnership with the Montgomery County Health & Human Services, targeting high utilizers of the 911 system.  The partnership focuses on reducing 911 calls from frequent users of the system by aligning and connecting them with the appropriate support and resources they need within the community. Dr. Roger Stone, the Medical Director for the MCFRS presented the research abstract on January 26, 2017 at the National Academy of EMS Physicians Annual Conference in New Orleans, Louisiana.  Authors of the research included Lt. Jamie Baltrotsky, Lt. Ashley Robinson, Dr. Roger Stone and Battalion Chief Alan Butsch.

The abstract poster, one out of over 200 research posters submitted, was awarded “Best Abstract Poster Presentation.” Dr. Stone accepted the award at an awards luncheon that was held after the presentations.  MCFRS continues to find innovative ways to deliver the highest quality care to citizens and, while this program is still in the beginning stages, the data is yielding promising results.

One car seat at a time, she’s making a big difference

The Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service is proud to announce that Emilie Crown, Manager of Montgomery County Fire & Rescue Service’s nationally recognized Car Seat Safety Program, was selected to receive the prestigious Barbara A. Foley Quality, Safety and Injury Prevention Award. The award recognizes individuals who exemplify exceptional innovation, dedication and advocacy in the field of emergency services.

Emilie has been leading the way in advancing safety for children for over 36 years. Initially as an Emergency Department nurse before bringing her talents to Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service to lead the department’s car seat safety program. She is the State’s only certified instructor for Safe Travel for all Children, a course that includes the travel needs of children with special healthcare needs. Emilie is well-known throughout the region for her contributions, tireless efforts, leadership and deep commitment to the safety and well-being of Montgomery County’s youngest residents and she leads the way in educating parents, caregivers and first responders on the importance of car seat safety. Over 150,000 seats have been inspected and installed in Montgomery County since the beginning of the program in 2000.

“Emilie’s efforts have been outstanding and she works tirelessly for the residents of Montgomery County,” said Fire Chief Scott Goldstein. “National research shows that three out of four car seats are used incorrectly. The goal of the car seat program is to educate on the proper use of car seats, booster seats and seat belts and to ultimately save lives. Emilie has also played a pivotal role in educating legislators on the importance of car seat laws designed to protect children.
