Firefighters Think Pink - Fire Department on a Mission to Generate Awareness and Save Lives

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and Montgomery County Fire and Rescue has joined the national campaign for the third year in an effort to raise awareness about the cause and money for cancer research and programs.

Breast cancer is the second leading cause of death in women and it is estimated that there are over 225,000 new cases each year and that 39,000 women will die from this disease. Approximately 2,050 men will be diagnosed with breast cancer and 20% will not survive. Breast cancer is not gender specific and firefighters in Montgomery County will be trading their traditional on-duty shirts for pink ones in support of breast cancer awareness throughout the month of October.

“Cancer affects millions of people worldwide and this program provides an opportunity to have an impact and make a difference in the community,” said Fire Chief Steven Lohr. “This cause is particularly important and one that, too often, strikes close to home.”

The International Association of Firefighter’s (IAFF) involvement in breast cancer awareness dates back to 2010 and was the result of "Resolution 21" at the 2010 IAFF Convention in San Diego, California.  This resolution, entitled "Care Enough to Wear Pink," launched a nationwide response by fire departments across the Country to support breast cancer awareness initiatives.

This year’s campaign by Montgomery County Fire and Rescue has raised $12,000 in proceeds to be donated to The Susan G. Komen Foundation and The Red Devils charity, a Maryland-based breast cancer organization whose mission is to fund services that improve the quality of life for Maryland breast cancer patients and their families. Montgomery County Career Fire Fighters Currently Selling "Pink Awareness" Apparel to Support Breast Cancer Awareness

Montgomery County Career Fire Fighters are currently selling various "Pink Awareness" apparel to show our Support for Breast Cancer Awareness Month.  As a matter of fact, you may have seen many of the MCFRS Firefighters wearing pink shirts while on duty to heighten awareness for this worthy cause.

All proceeds from the sales of these items will be donated to Susan G. Koman and Red Devils.  All items can be ordered through our web site by following this link:

All apparel purchased from this site can be paid via PayPal or by check. If you decide to pay by check, please either mail the check to the address below or drop your check off at the Union Office. Checks made payable to MCCFFA.

Rockville - - - The Montgomery County Career Fire Fighters Association IAFF Local 1664's Breast Cancer Awareness Committee is pleased to announce a check presentation ceremony to benefit the Maryland Affiliate of Susan G. Komen and the Red Devils, Inc.

October’s pink uniform t-shirt campaign promoting breast cancer awareness raised over $10,000. A portion of the net proceeds from this campaign is being donated to both the Maryland Affiliate of Susan G. Komen and the Red Devils, Inc. Both of these organizations are Maryland based non-profits which work in the breast cancer community providing grants, education and access to resources (e.g. - transportation to and from treatment). Please join us on Wednesday, December 14^th at 11:00 am at Montgomery County Fire Station 22 as the committee presents both organizations with donations.

MCFRS Fire Fighters Supporting Breast Cancer Awareness

All this month, you may see your favorite MCFRS Fire Fighter wearing a special pink uniform tee shirt in support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.  Below, Fire Station 22 A-Shift is proudly sporting their shirts.

In addition one of our fire fighters, Marshall Moneymaker, lost three sisters to breast cancer and was recently featured on ABC News telling his family story as well as what he is doing to make a difference.  Please take a moment to watch this video below:

Montgomery County Employees Federal Credit Union Makes Generous

Donation to Firefighter’s Breast Cancer Charity 

Rockville - - The Montgomery County Employees Federal Credit Union (MC EFCU) will present a check to Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service Firefighter Marshall Moneymaker for his charity that supports efforts to raise awareness about breast cancer. Firefighter Moneymaker has become a steadfast champion to the breast cancer community and has dedicated much of his off-duty time to raising awareness about the importance of early detection and raising funds to find a cure after he lost three sisters to the disease.

The MC EFCU learned of his story and kicked off a two-month campaign to raise funds to support his efforts and advocacy. The generous donation was the result of a credit card campaign in which $50 was donated for each new account opened. Officials will present a check for $4,000 to Moneymaker’s charity “For 3 Sisters” on Thursday, September 15^th.

Pretty in Pink!

Firefighters at Station 22A showed their true colors when they teamed up to show support as October’s 60-mile “Walk for a Cure” efforts were centered in Germantown over the weekend. The event brought in more than $5.3 million for research and community-based health and education programs and culminated in a rally on October 10th in Washington, D.C.
