National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day Is Saturday

Saturday is National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day. Have any unused, unwanted or expired prescription drugs laying around that you want to get rid of to prevent abuse or theft?

Well this Saturday is a good day to do it! Our partners in safety at Montgomery County Police will be offering a free and anonymous opportunity take back prescription drugs and over-the-counter medications at six drop off points. Fatal Collision on River Road

A little before 7 p.m. on Saturday, February 27 MCFRS Units were dispatched for a report of a motor vehicle collision with entrapment at the intersection of River Road and Pyle Drive, in Bethesda. First arriving units found a two vehicle collision, one of which was off the roadway in a ditch, with several people trapped in one vehicle. 

Several others were injured including passerby good Samaritans who were injured attempting a rescue prior to MCFRS arrival. Initially there were at least 5 injuries.

An EMS task force was quickly requested and responded to the scene. This brought a total of 12 fire and rescue units to the scene.

It was determined that three of the trapped occupants, two adults and one teenager, had succumbed to their injuries on scene. The fourth, believed to be a teenage female, was extricated and transported to a local trauma center with life threatening injuries. Several others were transported with non-life threatening injuries. 

The Montgomery County Police Collision Reconstruction Unit was called to the scene to conduct an investigation.

Fire Lieutenant Graduates From Montgomery County Police Training Academy

Fire Chief Lohr is extremely proud to announce the graduation of Lieutenant (Lt) Andrew Gettig, assigned to the Fire Investigation and Explosives section of the MCFRS, from the Montgomery County Police Training Academy, Session 60 yesterday.

Lt. Gettig was selected several months ago to fill a vacancy in the Fire Investigation and Explosives section.  One key requirement to fill this role is certification as a law enforcement officer in Montgomery County.  To obtain that certification Lt. Gettig was placed in the intensive, 27-week Police Training Academy program for all new law enforcement recruits that is designed to challenge the recruit physically, academically, and mentally.

If that was not enough, Lt. Gettig went a step further and distinguished himself as he was selected by Montgomery County Police Academy Instructors to receive the prominent Captain James E. Daly Award.  The award, created in memory of Captain James E. Daly who was tragically killed in the line of duty in 1972, is presented to the recruit who best exemplifies the ideals of guidance, knowledge, courage, skill, and dedication to public service. 

Lt. Gettig was presented this award by Mrs. Fran Daly, Captain Daly's widow, in a very moving ceremony.

Every 15 Minutes Program Today At Poolesville High School

Below is video from this mornings mock crash in front of Poolesville High School.  This is a day long event that we are partnering with Montgomery County Police and Poolesville staff on.  Our hope is that this program will help make the kids aware of distracted or drunk driving and help them to make good choices to avoid being in the situation below.

MCFRS Helps With Pedestrian Safety Education and Enforcement Efforts at Seneca Valley High School

Later on this morning, MCFRS Firefighters will again be at Seneca Valley High School to participate in a pedestrian safety initiative that includes handing out reflective materials to students.  Firefighters also stopped by the school yesterday.

The photo below shows MCFRS personnel handing out reflective materials to SVHS students yesterday.

The initiative kicked off last week in an effort to remind students to practice safe pedestrian behaviors and follows the tragic death of a 15 year old student killed while crossing Germantown Road this past October.

The Senior Safety Summit is a collaborative effort between the Fire Department, Police Department, Health and Human Services and the Office of Consumer Affairs aimed at informing, protecting and keeping seniors in the County safe and aware of resources and services available to them.

Fire Station 18 A-Shift Participates In National Night Out In Glenmont

Montgomery County Fire Station 18 participated Tuesday, August 2nd in the National Night Out Crime and Community Awareness campaign at Weller Road Elementary School. The local event was sponsored by Mrs. Rose Alvarez, President of the Glenmont Civic Association.

E718 (fire truck that carries hose and water) and AT718 (fire truck with the big ladder on top) partnered with police officers from the Fourth District to represent Montgomery County’s finest at the local event.  The Glenmont Civic Association organized activities to acquaint community residents with their local law enforcement and fire/rescue personnel as well as providing a platform for public safety to deliver crime and safety awareness messages.

Members from Company 18 set up static displays with the engine and tower providing residents an opportunity to see what we do first hand!  Captain Derrick Anthony, FS18 A-Shift, gave a brief introduction and emphasized to the residents that Montgomery County Fire and Rescue is an “All Hazards” community based fire department that is here to serve and protect the residents of Montgomery County.
